The principal export of the freshly-minted nation state of Kosovo is young men in slightly battered cars festooned with Albanian flags, driving round tooting their horns in celebration.

At least, that’s what I saw a lot of in the West End of London today.

I’m a natural supporter of the right to self-determination, if only because it seems far more appealing than the alternative of imposed rule by force. At the same time, though, border changes have historically been a trigger for conflict and war. I hope this one works out peacefully.
