When fonts go bad

This is what you get when something really goes wrong with KDE’s font settings (under Mandrake Linux 10.0):

It’s beautifully anti-aliased garbage—but garbage nonetheless. Unfortunately, it affects all user accounts, so I’m not sure how I can fix it short of reinstalling at least the whole GUI layer.
