I’m reminded of a conversation with a friend at university. He had spent a summer working for Microsoft in Cambridge a few years ago (1999 or 2000 perhaps), and reported that they were doing all their development on Linux machines, and all their documentation on Macs.

I don’t blame Microsoft for not eating their own dog food—having prepared a couple of books for print using Word, I can assure you that it’s not really the right tool for a publishing job, even if you are very patient.

But hang on, don’t Microsoft produce their own publishing software? I wonder why they don’t use it...
