iPlayer update: Resume functionality is back

My sleeplessness is your gain. Thanks to Paul G’s useful research (reported in the comments of a previous post), we now know that it’s not really necessary to leap around in the file.

I’ve stripped out that unnecessary code complexity this morning. As a result, downloads are faster, and you can resume a partial download once more. Handy!

More information can be found on the project page.

Getting a 403 Forbidden message when trying to download the Windows executable, sadly. (I have a Ruby install, I really ought to use that and not be so lazy!)

Oops, you’re quite right. It was a permissions problem; it should be rectified now.

Liam, you’ll only be able to download during the one week availability period, but you can keep the downloaded video and watch it whenever you like.

Just noising around the new iplayer site, disassembled the player.swf (looking for the new mp3 links) and found this interesting place to look around:

    http://extdev.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/3/

It’s linked in the player.swf for the new flash based radio player.

Installed iplayer-dl on an iMac running OS X Tiger today, works wonderfully. I did find I had to run ‘ruby setup.rb config’ with sudo or it wouldn’t work (IIRC it wouldn’t create a directory). Are the instructions incorrect, is it a mac bug or did I do something wrong?

The latest svn code now downloads broken files – exactly the same size, but no “moov” – again!

So I used an old backup of iplayer-dl (without resume), and it worked for the 2 files I tried: b00bybp3, b00793cx.
