iPlayer Downloader fixed again

I’m back from holiday, I’ve slept, and I’ve fixed the latest round of problems with the downloader.

Get your updates on the project page!

Ruby people who use the command line version might be pleased to know that it’s now available as a gem via the new Gemcutter service. If you’ve added Gemcutter as a source, just do (with sudo as required):

gem install iplayer-dl

Otherwise, you’ll need to specify the source:

gem install iplayer-dl --source http://gemcutter.org

    I really appreciate your work.

I wounder if there is any software like the iPlayer downloader that can download programes from ITV player, Channel 4, and Channel 5 (i.e. Demand 5)

    Hello Christine.

As you are using Windows XP, you will not need to download or install Ruby.

Paul has already compiled an exe for Windows. Just download it, from the link below, run, and you are ready to go.

    Hi Paul,
Some excellent work with this software, well done! I am getting this programme does not exist error message again (on virtually every programme that I’ve tried since 25/10). I am on the dreaded windows platform and using the exe package of ipdl. Any help or pointers would be helpful. thanks

I used i-Player Downloader for the first time today and was mightily impressed. Dead simple, does the job, and free. Thank you!

I also enjoyed reading your blog—it’s great to come across someone with a good vocabulary (and grammar, punctuation, etc.) and who expresses their ideas clearly and in an enjoyable style.

I particularly enjoyed your (now quite ancient) posts about Japan, being a former resident there myself (a loooong time ago) , still pretty fluent and still connected (married). Despite knowing how capable of casual dumb racism many Japanese are, I was still astounded to see the “gaijin go home” magazine pieces—“temee no kuni ni kaete yarina” indeed!

    Ganbatte kudasai!

    Hi Paul,
Many thanks for your work in finding such an elegant solution to downloading iplayer files.
My recent experience would suggest that Auntie has changed something in the format once again. ie I can download the file OK, but occasionally need to restart (which has not happened before), and the file will start to play OK, but then freezes within a couple of minutes, and refuses to continue or scroll / fast forward. I’m sure you will take a look when you have the time, but in the meanwhile, keep up the good work.
    My thanks once again.
    Best regards,
    Alan

Yea, how about it Paul ?

Isn’t “made by many” now engaged with FIVE demand website rewrite ? – how about convincing them that a user might just click a “button” and download the .flv file, even if at a low quality coding this would be good for promo purposes, no ?

They could include the embedded adverts with the download, and then a sponsors adverts might be archived for evermore on a users machine. Maybe then a sponsor might pay more for an advert “spot” if they thought that this would occur on a regular basis, yes ?

    Just a fleeting thought :)

Ali, FlimFlam – there is a command-line downloader called get_iplayer, (which I think uses Paul’s “engine” underneath), which DOES download ITV as well as BBC.

It’s a bit more terse and you need to read the docs carefully, but it works fine, I use it weekly.

    Find it at http://linuxcentre.net/getiplayer

Don’t worry about the ‘linuxcentre’ – there’s a windows version too.

And yes thanks again Paul for very fine work.

    good luck all

    Hi Paul,

Is there any way to change the timeout period for the download? I am connecting via VPN so the connection is slow and I cannot actually get beyond the 0.0% stage as it times out.

also, is this app open source?

    thanks!

Have the BBC been at it again? Had 3 failed downloads last night, all radio shows and I’ve never had any radio shows fail before.
